PREP GIRLS' SOCCER: Bush ends Lyncs' season.

Phoebe Greenwald and Maggie Graham combined for seven goals to lead Seattle's Bush High School past the Lynden Christian girls' soccer team 9-1 in the first round of the Class 1A Tri-District Tournament at Starfire Field on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

The Blazers held a 7-0 lead at the half behind four goals by Graham. She scored three goals over a two minute span to help eliminate the Lyncs from postseason play. Lynden Christian finished the season 5-15 overall.

"The wheels just kind of fell off," Lynden Christian coach Brent DeRuyter said. "We understood coming in that they were a talented team with excellent scorers, but if we gave them any space at all they were shooting."

Bush took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute on a goal by Chloe Cross. Greenwald made it 2-0 with a goal in the 14th minute, before Graham scored three unassisted goals from the 28th to the 31st minute. Graham's fourth came in the 39th minute.

"When they opened it up early like that I think it kind of shook us up," DeRuyter said. "I thought in the second half we did a pretty good job rebounding from that. I was proud of the way we played in the second half."

After two more goals by Greenwald early in the second half, the Lyncs' Jessica Tjoelker found the back of the net in the 71st minute. Coryn Bajema assisted on the goal.

"I don't think a lot of people thought we would even make it to the Tri-District Tournament this season so to do that was a great accomplishment," DeRuyter said. "Coming into the season I don't think a lot of people expected much from us, but I think we surprised some people."
