In the Class 2A Northwest District Meet on Saturday, Oct. 31, three Northwest Conference boys' cross country teams - Burlington-Edison, Sehome and Squalicum - advanced to the 2A State Championships next week in Pasco.
Fourteen teams competed on the muddy course at South Whidbey High School, but only the top four teams advance to state. Burlington-Edison led the pack with 38 points, Sehome and Squalicum followed with 70 and 76 points, respectively, and Lakewood rounded out the top four with 114 points.
Individually, the top 20 runners advance to state, despite if their team made the top four team slots. Sehome's Scott Carlyle finished first as the district champion with a time of 16 minutes and 25.04 seconds, and led a strong NWC group of individuals who also qualified for state.
Joining Carlyle were Sehome teammates, Eric Schneider , who finished in seventh (16:44.90) and Kyle Szegedi , who finished in 15th (17:05.93).
"Scott ran a really patient race," Sehome coach Kevin Ryan said in a phone interview. "He's getting better each week and ran tough but smart."
Ryan said along with Carlyle, his seniors have really led the strong Sehome squad to state this season.
"We have three seniors, Nate Wilson, Eric Schneider and Galen O'Moore - its come to their attention this last couple of weeks that its their last season," Ryan said. "They really stepped up and listened all week and came out today with smart game plan, went out and executed."
Top team Burlington-Edison had five of its seven varsity runners qualify for state, including second place Tyler Williams, who was edged out of first by Carlyle in the last 100 meters and finished in 16:28.24. Joining Williams was Connor Whan, Antonio Morales, Nathan Power and Alan DenAdel; all Burlington-Edison qualifiers crossed the finish line under 17:10.
Other NWC individual state qualifiers were Blaine's Tom Bradley (17:04.9l); Bellingham's Nick Lobb (17:00.53) and Andrew Ryder (17:07.57); Squalicum's Danny Gibson (16:41.28), Kole DeGolier (16:55.26) and Patrick Gibson (17:06.35) and Mount Baker's Connor Williams (17:06.79) and Dillon Quintana (17:10.40).
In the next week, Sehome is planning to get more rested and continue its tempo runs to prepare for Pasco.
"We are going to get rested in the next seven days, but still do a decent amount of work to prepare," Ryan said. "We were happy with the second place finish, but we're hoping to do better next week."
