ANACORTES - In another forgettable loss during a winless season, a few dozen faithful Sehome football fans found someone to remember.

Freshman running back Titi Lamositele, just up from the C team and not even on the program, turned in a remarkable varsity debut during the Mariners' 35-0 Northwest Conference loss to Anacortes on Friday, Oct. 30.

Lamositele, running mostly against the Seahawks' starters, gained 48 yards on 12 carries and lost yardage on only one play. Considering that the rest of Sehome's roster netted only 39 yards, coach Kevin Johnson thought it was a memorable performance.

When asked if the freshman prospect reminded him of other good young Sehome backs in the past two decades, Johnson responded, "No, but what he does remind me of is a rhinoceros.

"He turned in a great effort, especially considering he's not yet really familiar with varsity schemes," said Johnson, whose Mariners have one more shot at victory-a non-league against Sultan at Civic Stadium.

Considering that Sehome (0-9) came in allowing an average of 45 points per game, Johnson was especially proud of the Mariners' defensive spunk in the first quarter on a night of consistent wind gusts of 20 to 30 miles per hour.

Daniel Hernandez and Haden Roedell recovered fumbles forced by hard Sehome hits and Roedell and sophomore Sam Aubert shared a sack that ultimately forced a punt.

But Sehome fumbled a punt snap on its first possession, leaving the Seahawks (2-7) only 13 yards from the goal. Daniel Codd ran four consecutive times, scoring from the 1.

Codd finished with 85 yards on 17 carries, including a 27-yard third-quarter touchdown that removed all doubt at 28-0.

Sophomore quarterback Cody Culp showed he'll be someone for NWC rivals to contend with, showing a nice soft touch while completing 9 of 15 passes for 77 yards, with touchdown tosses of 9 and 14 yards to junior Jackson Kirkpatrick and 7 yards to Chris Stoneham on the final play of the first half.

Stoneham's score typified the Mariners' season-long misfortunes. When a fourth-down Sehome pass fell incomplete, Anacortes took over on Sehome's 43-yard line nine seconds before halftime. On second down, wide receiver Kirkpatrick threw a trick pass to Torrey Merritt for 29 yards and a roughing-the-passer penalty tacked on seven yards to the 7 with no time left.

Sehome paid the price when Culp drilled a hard shot over the middle for a touchdown to Stoneham, since the half could not end on a defensive penalty.

The Mariners proved stubborn defensively in the second quarter. Anacortes needed 13 plays to drive only 41 yards, scoring on the first of Kirkpatrick's touchdown catches.

The Mariners may be forced to recover quickly if they're to have a shot at salvaging a victory, because Johnson said the Sultan game probably will be played Thursday.

Anacortes displayed several trick plays, including a two-point conversion pass from Codd to Faris Diemert after the Seahawks appeared ready to kick following Codd's first touchdown.
