After taking consecutive losses in the last two weeks the Squalicum football team needed to get back on track if its postseason hopes were going to become a reality.

A 48-0 drubbing of Anacortes on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Civic Stadium was just the shot of confidence the Storm needed.

"We started a little slow, but then we started to roll," senior Evan Fenton said. "Give them credit because they played tough, especially at the beginning, but I think we got the job done. This was a big confidence boost for us coming off those two losses."

Nikko Walker got Squalicum going with a 2-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter that gave the Storm a 7-0 lead. Anacortes marched down to the 22-yard line on its next possession, but a halfback pass on fourth down fell incomplete to stop the drive.

From there things started to get away from the Seahawks.

Squalicum scored three times over a four minute span in the second quarter, sandwiching a 44-yard punt return by Christian Foster between a 38-yard gallop by Brad Miller and another short plunge by Walker, to begin to pull away.

Even when things didn't go Squalium's way, like turning the ball over on Anacortes' goal line, a constant rain and a constant pounding by the Storm's defense stymied Anacortes.

"We did what we could with what he had," Anacortes coach Bill Evans said. "We were playing them well early, but then we had a couple of turnovers and gave them a short field and they took advantage of that. Then they had that punt return and it was awful hard to get going after that."

The Storm (4-3, 4-3, 3-2) continued to roll in the second half. It took Squalicum just two plays to find the end zone at the start of the third quarter, this time on a long pass. Quin Moore found Jeremy King open for a 62-yard catch and pass to make it 35-0 with just over a minute gone in the second half. Miller tacked on his second score a few minutes later on a weaving 14-yard run to push lead to 42-0.

A 22-yard touchdown catch by Luke Kryt in the fourth quarter capped the Storm's scoring.

"We needed this game," Squalicum coach Reed Richardson said. "I think we got Anacortes when they were a little beat up, but that's a classy program. They're going to turn it around."

Miller finished with 87 yards on nine carries, Walker had 93 yards on seven carries, and Moore went 5 for 10 for 143 yards and two scores to lead Squalicum.

The Storm's defense also had five interceptions and held Anacortes (1-6, 1-6, 1-4) to 58 yards rushing on 27 carries.

"For us this was all about bouncing back," Richardson said. "We played a very difficult early season schedule. We had a huge win over Burlington-Edison and then we have some guys sick and injured and we drop those two games and that was a tough two weeks. So for us we bounced back, had a great week of practice, and it showed."
