The Jeff McDonald era for the Whatcom Community College volleyball team got off to a bit of an unusual start with a Friday afternoon match against visiting Tacoma, but it also got off to a good start. The Orcas swept the non-league match 25-19, 25-23, 25-23, even though they were facing a team playing for the 10th time this season.
"This was the best start I could have asked for - 3-0," McDonald said in a phone interview. "We played a really balanced game."
Squalicum alum Dani Lindsay led WCC with an impressive .524 hitting percentage. Lynden Christian graduate Kelsie Meenderinck had a .250 hitting average, but had a strong game serving, according to McDonald. Sarah Cicchitti, who played at Ferndale, led the Orcas with four aces, while Sabrina Schwindler had a team-high 12 kills.
