As Oktoberfest celebrations near their fervent peak in Germany this week, Pacific Northwest beer fans should take note of another occasion worth celebrating - the Full Sail Brewing Company's 21st birthday.
To honor the birthday, the brewery has recently released a delicious Doppelbock ale.
While there are older microbreweries in the Pacific Northwest, Full Sail's birthday is worth noting as proof that microbreweries can take the time and energy to produce well-crafted beers and still thrive as businesses.
Plus, its Doppelbock tastes really good.
It has a reddish brown color when poured in a glass. The first taste had a malty smoothness and a biting aftertaste of alcohol - no doubt a result of the beer's 8.3 percent alcohol-by-volume content.
Doppelbocks usually taste exceptionally malty, and while this one doesn't, I think it makes it easy to drink. The beer didn't have the heaviness I expect from darker beers like the Doppelbock.
It's made with ample amounts of malt and a lesser amount of Noble hops, according to Full Sail's Web site.
The beer should be available in 22-ounce bottles from September through December.
WHAT'S ON TAP
The Chuckanut Brewery and Kitchen has put some new selections on tap. The brewery now offers a Wheat Ale, a Dunkel Lager and a Pilsner Lager.
If you haven't yet, be sure to try the seasonals from Boundary Bay Brewery and Bistro. It has four seasonals on tap now, a Harvest Ale, a Traverse Ale, a Reefnetter Ale and a Pilsner Ale.
