VALEDICTORIAN DAVID AMONSEN

Age: 18.

Fall 2009 plan: Attending John Brown University to study graphic design.

What is the key to academic success? "In general, I find that it's prudent to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. Never mind what the rubric says or what other people are doing; trust your judgment, and do whatever you feel is necessary to complete the task to your fullest capacity. Having said that, know when you can give yourself a break - only choose to fight the battles that are most important."

VALEDICTORIAN PAMELA BAUTHUES

What is the key to academic success? "It's imperative to learn what teachers expect out of you and how far you can push yourself. Prioritizing is also key in finishing what has to be done and keeping track of what's important."

What is the key to academic success? "I think that organization and hard work are the keys to academic success."

Most influential teacher? "There are so many talented teachers at Squalicum that have played an influential role in my education that I can't pick one."

Age: 18.

Fall 2009 plan: Attending Mt. Hood Community College to finish up nursing prerequisites and then enroll in the nursing program.

What is the key to academic success? "I think that anyone is capable at succeeding academically if they are motivated and try their hardest. I think a key to motivation at this age is maturity. If one is mature enough to understand the importance of their high school education they are more likely to be motivated and do well. I also believe that academic success in high school doesn't necessarily relate to a successful life. In high school we are all at different places in our lives going through difference experiences, some people are at a place where they can focus on school and do well, others aren't, and that's OK as long as someday they get the proper motivation to achieve whatever they want."
