Memorial Day weekend events: Ceremonies, studio tour, Ski to Sea

ZOE FRALEY

Three-day weekends are a beautiful thing, especially when the weather is obliging. So keep your fingers crossed for sun, and remember to be thankful to the men and women to whom this Monday is dedicated.

FESTIVAL OF FLAGS AND REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY

More than 1,300 flags will line the paths of Greenacres Memorial Park, at the corner of Axton and Northwest roads in Ferndale, this weekend. On Monday at the park, Moles Family Funeral Homes & Crematory will offer a Remembrance Ceremony from 2 to 3 p.m.

MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVANCES

To honor service members and veterans, attend a Memorial Day ceremony at 8:45 a.m. at Sunnyland Memorial Park on James Street. Or observe the day at 10:45 a.m. at Bayview Cemetery on Woburn Street.

LUMMI ISLAND ARTISTS' STUDIO TOUR

Take the ferry over to Lummi Island this weekend to check out how the local artists work. The free studio tour runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For a listing of artists, go online to www.lummi-island.com.

SKI TO SEA

If you’re not watching or participating in this seven-leg, 85-mile race, then get out of the way. Things are going to be crazy while it’s going on this Sunday, especially in Fairhaven, where the big race ends with a splash. For more information and photos from Ski to Sea, check out TheBellinghamHerald.com/skitosea.

WATERSLIDES

Nothing says summer’s here like making a splash after slipping down a slide. This weekend marks the opening of the Birch Bay Waterslides, 4874 Birch Bay Lynden Road, in Blaine. Call 371-7500 for hours and prices.
