Local author Jemma "J.D." EveryHope turned science fiction into sweet reality with her short story, "Circuit."

EveryHope was honored this month at the L. Ron Hubbard Achievement Awards in Hollywood after winning a first place spot in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest.

The Sehome High School graduate, 21, is now attending Sarah Lawrence College in New York, and she speaks with The Herald about writing without a back-up plan.

Question: Tell me about your winning story "Circuit."

Answer: My story is from the point of view of an electronic book that is essentially an artificial intelligence. It passes through the hands of three owners and sees how the world changes. It's kind of a commentary about how literature can change the world from the point of view of a book.

Q: How did you feel when you won?

A: I was pretty ecstatic when I found out. This is my first time I've entered the contest. Other winners had entered five or six times, and one had entered no less than 22 times before winning. Since this is my first time, I felt pretty lucky.

Q: What are you working on now?

A: I'm revising a novel and working on another novel and working on about 12 to 15 short stories. There are a number of short stories that I'll finish or put aside because I'm not quite sure how to make it come together as a concept.

Q: What are your goals for the future?

A: I want to be a professional author, which is quite difficult. I'm working on that. That's pretty much it. I don't have any back-up plans

Q: Any advice for aspiring authors?

A: Keep on writing. People always say they don't have time for writing, and of course they don't; nobody does. If you really love something, you just have to go out and do it. One of my teachers said you have to write a million bad words to put a string of good words together.
