Gas prices are staggering and plane tickets aren’t getting any cheaper. But if you think a summer break just isn’t in the cards, think again. Pack up a bag and a picnic, and it’s a quick drive to several scenic spots where you can spend the day or the weekend.
Here are a few ideas for day trips with a view of the sea.
LUMMI ISLAND: Take a ride over to Gooseberry Point and hop on the Whatcom Chief ferry with a bike, a car or as a pedestrian. For fine cooking, head over to the Willows Inn and nosh on prawns on the deck, or take a trip to the Three Pheasants Farm to pick up some fresh lavender.
WHITE BOCK, B.C.: Take a jaunt over the border to this seaside town. Stroll down the boardwalk, pick up a snack at a café and watch the tide roll away.
SEMIAHMOO: Ride the bike trails along the spit, comb the beach for treasure and keep an eye out for all sorts of birds and wildlife. If you want a bit of luxury, head over to the Semiahmoo Resort for a meal or spa service.
ORCAS ISLAND: Take the ferry from Anacortes to this picturesque island in the San Juans. Hike to the top of Mount Constitution and take a look at the spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding islands.
ANACORTES: Shop for antiques, check out the docks and admire the scenery during a trip through Anacortes. If you’re there on a Saturday, scope out the local foods and crafts at the Farmers Market at the Depot Arts Center.
