Family
CHILDREN'S FILM FESTIVAL: Nine short award-winning films for young people are screened at 11 a.m. today and Sunday at The Pickford Cinema, 1416 Cornwall Ave., sponsored by Pickford Film Center (formerly Whatcom Film Association). Admission is $3. In addition, hands-on workshops are offered at Whatcom Children’s Museum, Allied Arts Gallery, the Center for Expressive Arts and Experiential Education, Blue Horse Gallery and The Upfront Theatre.

PROCESSION OF THE SPECIES: Participate in or watch a parade celebrating community, art and nature in this annual, all-ages event today. Line up at 5 p.m. in front of Bellingham City Hall, 210 Lottie St.
For your costume, use recycled materials to create masks to become a plant, animal or other species. No motorized vehicles, no words (written or spoken) and no live animals are allowed. The closing ceremony takes place at Maritime Heritage Park, with live music. For more information, call 778-7000 or visit www.bpots.org.

"WHEN ELMO GROWS UP:" Abby Cadabby, the newest Muppet on Sesame Street joins Elmo, Zoe, Rosita and all of her furry friends in asking "What do you want to be when you grow up?" with a musical show-and-tell of the possibilities of all kinds of careers, onstage at 7 p.m. Wednesday and 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday at the Tacoma Dome.
The production comes to the Everett Events Center at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. May 16; 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. May 17; and 2 p.m. May 18. TRY OUT A KAYAK: Learn all about kayaking and try out a few boats today during the annual WAKE Demo Day in Bellingham. The family friendly event runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Bloedel Donovan Park, which is off Electric Avenue. The day is a celebration of paddling put on by the Whatcom Association of Kayak Enthusiasts. Entry is free. Plunk down $5 if you want to demo boats. WAKE will have all the necessary equipment to do so, including safety gear. Details: www.wakekayak.org.

DISTRICT BASEBALL TOURNAMENTS: Six Whatcom County baseball teams hope to take a step towards reaching their respective state tournaments today. Ferndale is the only county team alive in the Class 3A Northwest District Tournament, as the Golden Eagles play Shorecrest at 2 p.m. at Joe Martin Field in the first round.
City rivals Sehome and Bellingham will meet at 3 p.m. in the first round of the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament in Anacortes. That game follows Lynden's first-round game against Cedarcrest in the same tournament.
In the Class 1A sub district tournament, Nooksack Valley and Meridian each will try to grab one of the top three spots to advance to next week's tri-district tournament. The Pioneers and Trojans play Friday Harbor and Coupeville, respectively, at noon in the sub district semifinals at Blaine's Pipeline Fields and will play in either the tournament championship game or third-place game at 3 p.m.
DISTRICT SOCCER TOURNAMENTS: Seven Whatcom County boys' soccer teams will be in action in their respective district tournaments today. Ferndale will get the day started by hosting Arlington in a 9 a.m. first-round game of the Class 3A Northwest District Tournament at Whatcom Community College. Squalicum will be at Meadowdale for its 1 p.m. first-round game. Both games are single elimination.
Bellingham and Sehome play a doubleheader at WCC in the first round of the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament, with the Red Raiders hosting Sultan at 6 p.m. and the Mariners taking on Archbishop Murphy at 8 p.m.
Lynden also plays a 1 p.m. first-round game at Lakewood. Meridian has already secured a trip to next week's Class 1A bi-district tournament with Thursday's 3-0 win over Lynden Christian, and the Trojans look to lock up the top seed with a 3 p.m. championship game against King's at Mount Vernon. The Lyncs play to extend their season another week with an 11 a.m. third-place game against Friday Harbor at Mount Vernon.
WWU BLUE-SILVER GAME: The Western Washington University football teams wraps up spring practices and tries to get ready for the fall season with its annual spring game. The Vikings will split into two teams for the noon game at Civic Stadium.
