WORK HARD

Heather Alvis graduated from Oregon State University with a teaching degree and soon realized that she didn’t wanted to be a teacher.

“It was an emotional disaster. I’m much happier now.”

So she taught herself HTML, took Web design classes at Whatcom Community College and got her foot in the door at Mindfly, a Web design company. She is now working with fellow Mindfly staff to launch a new company, SRA Web Publishing, which will be online soon.

PLAY HARD

“I play a lot of Ultimate,” Alvis says, referring to the seven-on-seven college sport that mixes soccer and Frisbee.

She is a member of Bellingham Ultimate, which meets weekly to scrimmage. Low turnout this summer forced the club to play Goaltimate, a fast-paced version of Ultimate that resembles half-court basketball.

“Goaltimate is an excellent workout in a short amount of time,” she said.
