It’s that time of year when everyone heads outdoors to enjoy what Whatcom County has to offer, but that doesn’t mean business comes to a halt. Here are three trends to watch for:
THE CHECK IS IN THE MAIL
Many Americans eligible for stimulus checks from the U.S. government should start receiving them by now, so what they do with them will be of interest for the retail community. There’s been speculation, but many economists believe at least part of the money will be spent within six months. The third quarter tends to be the strongest in terms of retail sales, so it’ll be interesting to see if this injection of money is seen in the back-to-school sales, construction and tourism.
WEATHER BECOMES KEY FOR AGRICULTURE
Early summer is when many Whatcom County farmers start looking toward the skies to see what good fortune they will have with the harvest. Raspberries are starting to ripen and apples are just starting to grow, so local fruit farmers are generally hoping for steady temperatures and no wild stuff, like hail storms or long heat waves. What happens now impacts the yield and quality of the fruit.
HOUSING SUPPLY
With the school year complete, this is usually the best time for families to buy a house so they can move in during the summer and have the children settled before school starts again in the fall. Sellers know this, too, so the supply should be at its peak now.
