GLACIER — A 20-year-old Oregon man died from injuries suffered when his car hit a tree on Mount Baker Highway Thursday afternoon.
Kyle J. Sonnen was westbound on the highway near milepost 31 when he attempted to pass another vehicle in a no-pass zone just after 2 p.m. He apparently lost control of his 2000 Subaru station wagon and ran into a tree, according to a Washington State Patrol press release.
Sonnen and his passenger, 18-year-old Laura E. Deatherage, were taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham, where Sonnen was pronounced dead. Deatherage was in satisfactory condition Friday evening.
The cause of the wreck remains under investigation. State Patrol spokesman Kirk Rudeen said speed may have been a factor.
Sonnen and Deatherage were visiting from Bend, Ore., according to the press release.
