RMC Architects is designing a new space for Wilson Library's Special Collections Department at Western Washington University.
The department is currently located on the second level of the library with archival storage spread throughout the building. The new design will consolidate it to the sixth floor and accommodate future growth, as well as the need for archival environment upgrades, according to a company press release.
The Special Collections Department encompasses a public research space, conference room, seminar room, workspace, storage space, public/exhibit reception space, and offices.
The RMC project team includes partner Brad Cornwell and architects Neil McCarthy and Jason Williard.
Some of the collections displayed in the library include the Helene Whitson Collection - a collection of children's books in unique formats such as pop-up books and books with moveable parts - and The Fly Fishing Collection which displays diverse materials supporting the sport of fly fishing. RMC's design will allow for multiple display options for these and other library artifacts and reproductions.
The project bid was in late May with construction beginning this summer. The estimated completion time is approximately six months.
