A three-year-old program that encourages people to walk, ride a bike, take the bus or carpool now has 10,000 members and is still growing, according to Whatcom Transportation Authority.
Whatcom Smart Trips participants go online and log trips they making using alternative modes of transportation. Over the past year, about 3,000 new members joined, WTA spokeswoman Maureen McCarthy said.
To date, participants have logged 18.5 million "miles not driven." That's enough miles to go between the Earth and the moon 77.5 times, or somebody could go one-fifth of the way to the sun, according to StarDate Online.
The program is a partnership of Whatcom County, the city of Bellingham, WTA and the Whatcom Council of Governments. Go to whatcomsmarttrips.org for more information.
