BELLINGHAM - Not all retailers will be participating in the Black Friday craziness.

Nancy Taylor, owner of Dream On Futon Co., has been a longtime supporter of Buy Nothing Day, closing her 26-year-old store on the day after Thanksgiving to make a statement about the frenzy that takes place that day.

"I'm putting my money where my values are, and am closing my store on a very good cash day," Taylor said.

It may be a bigger gesture than in previous years, given the current state of the economy and how hard retailers have been hit so far this season. Now in its 17th year, Buy Nothing Day is an event more about giving people a chance to ponder consumerism and enjoy the day doing something else.

"I hope my gesture will be rewarded with the thought that I may be helping others to think about appreciating other things besides consumer goods, like friends, family and nature, all of which symbolize the meaning of Thanksgiving for me," Taylor said.
