WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED

Lions to get a test

If you’re in the mood to watch some serious volleyball on Saturday, Oct. 18, head to Lynden High School. The undefeated Lions will play a non-conference match against Fife High School, a team out of Tacoma that’s been ranked no. 7 in the state. The contest is set for 2 p.m.

Lynden and Fife have battled before at state, so the coaches decided to play a friendly before the start of the postseason, Lynden coach Chris Elsner said.

How friendly it will be remains to be seen.

Meridian tested in shootouts

With four shootouts under its belt already this season, the Meridian girls’ soccer team has late game experience other teams might not have heading into postseason play.

Meridian coach Aaron Jacoby knows his younger players have benefitted from feeling that extra pressure four times, the most recent being a 2-1 shootout victory over Mount Baker.

But Jacoby is more impressed with the leadership of a strong core of seniors that have made three trips to state and plan on doing so again.

“I really think, yes, it’s doing us a lot of good, but those (senior) girls, they’ve been there done that,” Jacoby said.

Transfer giving Mariners a boost

Sehome girls’ swimming coach Don Helling is grateful that junior Megan McGuire was ready to swim again after transferring to Se-home from Houston before the season began.

“Megan hadn’t competed for a while, but she overheard some girls talking about swimming in the hallway and asked if she could join them,” he said. “We’re sure glad to have her. She’s a really solid kid.”

In Sehome’s 107-76 loss to Squalicum on Tuesday, Oct. 14, McGuire finished a competitive second in the 100 butterfly, clocking 1:09.54 to a state-qualifying 1:05.03 by Storm senior Jessica Vlasic. McGuire also finished second in the 200 freestyle in 2:11.17, barely missing the state qualifying time of 2:10.90, as Vlasic sprinted to victory in an impressive 2:01.00.
