BELLINGHAM - Bargainica, a local discount organic and natural foods store, will close its State Street location Oct. 31.
The closure of the store at 902 State St. will give owner Stephen Trinkaus a chance to focus on the other Bargainica store at the Bellingham Public Market on Cornwall Avenue.
Between now and Oct. 31, the remaining merchandise at the State Street store will be sold at incremental discounts. Store hours will be reduced to 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
That store has seven full-time employees, some of whom will move to the Cornwall Avenue store. Trinkaus anticipates the closure will result in the loss of four jobs.
Trinkaus gave several reasons for the closure, including increasing competition, rising food prices and the economic downturn.
"The (State Street) store was particularly vulnerable because of its small size and the fact that it was not a destination location," Trinkaus said. "I think that area could work for a neighborhood store, but it has to be owner-operated. I couldn't be at both places at once."
