LYNDEN - Lynden junior Blair Bomber likes to joke that he was "in hiding for my first two football seasons."
The 5-foot-8, 155-pound flanker did a pretty good job of playing hide-and-seek against Sehome, going untouched on three long touchdowns during the Lions' 57-12 Northwest Conference homecoming victory on Friday, Oct. 10.
"Hey, it's awfully hard for Blair to hide now," said Lynden coach Curt Kramme of Bomber, who scored on runs of 62 and 18 yards and on a 79-yard pass from junior quarterback Jordan Hastings.
All three scores came in the first half as the Lions (4-2 overall, 4-1 NWC, 4-0 Class 2A) amassed 340 yards and held Sehome (2-4, 2-4, 1-3) to 78 while taking a 41-6 lead at halftime.
The first person to leap out of the stands and hug Bomber was big brother Brady. The college freshman made the trip from Thurston County, where he's on a basketball scholarship at St. Martin's after four years on varsity football and basketball at Lynden.
"Blair is a lot faster than I ever was in football," Brady Bomber said.
"I scored a touchdown in my first varsity game as a freshman and then I didn't score again until this year," said Blair Bomber, who caught four passes for 110 yards to help Hastings to a 14 for 23 night for 263 yards and two touchdown passes, with no interceptions.
As effective as Blair Bomber was, he was far from the whole show, as the Lions averaged 10 yards per play while rolling up 503 yards.
"What I especially liked was that we played with confidence," Kramme said, referring to the way his offensive line and backfield clicked so well together. "Confidence, but not cockiness. We have nine non-seniors starting on offense and seven on defense, and we had not really been playing with confidence."
Sehome junior Justin Santos prevented Lynden from earning a shutout, scoring on a 2-yard run to cap a 56-yard, 12-play drive in the second quarter and on a 49-yard sprint in the fourth quarter. Santos finished with 19 carries for 110 yards, but the Lions otherwise held the Mariners to a net of 50 yards.
"That guy really runs hard," Kramme said of Santos.
Kramme was especially pleased to see six others besides Bomber score, including Hastings on a 2-yard run, David Gaylord on a 10-yard sprint, and Jace Baxter-Bowen on a 36 yard pass from Hastings, all in the first half.
In the second half, Jordan Weeks scored on a 1-yard run after a 30-yard dash, junior Joel Brown kicked a 27-yard field goal and backup quarterback Cameron Canales scored on a 25-yard scramble. Weeks caught five passes for 66 yards and Baxter-Bowen snagged three for 63 yards.
"That was a real nice effort by Jace from Hastings," Kramme said. "It was a meaningful play."
Sehome's second-quarter touchdown drive cut Lynden's lead to 20-6, but Blair Bomber scored on a 62-yard run on a pitch on the Lions' first ensuing play. The next time Lynden got the ball, Bomber completed his 79-yard pass-run.
"This was by far my best game offensively," said Bomber, who appreciated that the line protected Hastings so well that he was not sacked and had plenty of time to throw. "I've played better defense before, but the numbers were better tonight."
