Editor's note: The Port of Bellingham and city of Bellingham have joined forces to redevelop 137 waterfront acres that the port acquired from Georgia-Pacific West Inc. in 2005 as well as an additional 83 acres of waterfront property. This weekly update, provided by the port, will help keep citizens informed about the process.

The Port of Bellingham will publish the supplemental draft environmental impact statement regarding The Waterfront District for public comment and review on Wednesday, Oct. 15.

The study, which analyzes the port's "preferred alternative" for the waterfront redevelopment, includes street grid options as well as the most up-to-date information and illustrations regarding potential view corridors, building heights and traffic patterns.

The new study is an addition to one published in January 2008, and together they measure potential impacts of redevelopment of The Waterfront District during the next 20 to 30 years. The study looks at impacts to earth, air quality, water resources, plants and animals, environmental health, noise, land use, relationship to plans and policies, population, employment and housing, aesthetics such as light and glare, historic and cultural resources, transportation, public services, and utilities.

The reports will be used to help finalize a master plan for the 220-acre project.

A 30-day public review and comment period on the study begins Wednesday, Oct. 15. A formal public hearing will be held at 6 p.m., Nov. 6, in the port's Harbor Center Conference Room, 1801 Roeder Ave.

Written comments can be sent by Nov. 15 to the port's designated State Environmental Policy Act official, Andrew Maron, by e-mail at sepaofficial@portofbellingham.com or by regular mail to: Andrew Maron, SEPA Responsible Official, Port of Bellingham, P.O. Box 1677, 1801 Roeder Ave., Bellingham, WA 98227-1677.

Also beginning Wednesday, the document will be on the port's Web site, www.portofbellingham.com, in the Latest News section.

Copies of the study will be available for review at the following locations: Bellingham Central Library, 210 Central Ave.; Port of Bellingham, 1801 Roeder Ave.; and Bellingham Planning Office, 210 Lottie St.

Printed copies of the report, which comes with a CD, will be available for purchase at port offices. For more information, contact Brenda Tate at (360) 676-2500 or by e-mail at brendat@portofbellingham.com.

COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE

The port will have a waterfront redevelopment project open house from noon to 1 p.m. and from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal.

The open house will include a brief presentation, extensive project display information and the opportunity to talk with port project staff. It is not a public hearing, but an opportunity for people to learn about the new information, see the latest view corridor illustrations and to ask questions.
