WWU Three to watch
No. 10, Randall Eldridge, running back
Eldridge finally makes his first start after having good spring and fall training camps. He's done it all against the Vikings in practice, now it's time to do it against someone else.
No. 6, Adam Perry, quarterback
Much is expected of Perry as he enters his second full season as a starter. Perry struggles against WOU last year, completing 14 of 33 passes. He'll be looking to do better.
No. 9, Caleb Jessup, Linebacker
Jessup jumps into the middle linebacker role with some big shoes to fill. He's not quite as fast as Shane Simmons was, but he has good instincts and can really hit.
He must be stopped
No. 8, J.T. Gilmore, linebacker
Last season: 122 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, 3 interceptions
Blocking Gilmore is a challenge for every team the Wolves face. WWU has an upper hand because they bring back an experienced offensive line.
WWU Three Keys to the Game
1. Get the offense going early
With WWU expecting great things from its offense this season it will be important for the unit to get off to a good start. The Vikings can't afford not to be able to move the ball well in their first game.
2. Avoid mistakes on special teams
Special teams could be a weak point for WWU, at least early in the season. The Vikings will be playing several young players on the various units and with that always come some interesting moments.
3. Pressure the quarterback
This is a key to any game, but with Western Oregon using a quarterback rotation and playing two new faces at the position, it becomes even more crucial. Anything the Vikings can do to force the Wolves into mistakes will help.
Scouting the Wolves
Location: Monmouth, Ore.
Nickname: Wolves
Coach: Arne Ferguson
Last season: 9-2, independent
Returning starters: 18
Outlook: The Wolves already have a game behind them heading into their contest with WWU - a 31-14 loss to Portland State - but that doesn't make Western Oregon any less of a mystery. WOU is trying to find a quarterback after graduating one of the best in school history in Mark Thorson and right now the team is employing a by-committee approach.
They have talent at running back and receiver, but it won't matter if they can't find the right person to run the offense. On defense, linebacker J.T. Gilmore leads a solid group.
The Wolves finished 9-2 last season playing as an independent, but they were hit hard by graduation. There's still enough talent left, though, that the WOU could claim a GNAC crown if Central Washington stumbles.
Prediction: The Vikings are 5-6 at home under coach Robin Ross, but won just one game at Civic Stadium last season. Still, it's a long trip and a tough place to play and WWU is hungry for the season to start.
Score: The Vikings win a close one, WWU 21, WOU 20
