BLAINE - Domination might be an understatement.

Blaine quarterback Daniel Gorze threw three touchdowns in the first quarter - two to Trevor Chau - as the Borderites opened the 2008 football season with a 60-0 win over the Sands Scorpions of Delta, B.C. at home.

Gorze threw five touchdowns in all, including an 80-yarder to Chau with 4 minutes, 36 seconds left in the second quarter that put Blaine up 42-0 in the non-conference game.

The Borderites led 48-0 by halftime and didn't throw a pass the rest of the game. Several Blaine players got on the field as the Borderites ran down the clock during the second half.

"I think it was a good game to start with," Blaine coach Jay Dodd said.

The story, as typical, was in the numbers. Blaine racked up 515 yards in total offense while holding the Scorpions to just 64, including six rushing yards. Sands' running backs were repeatedly stuffed at the line by a surging Borderite front seven. Sal Calendino led the Scorpions' ground attack with 10 rushes for just six yards.

For the Scorpions, there was just no where to run.

"That was our No. 1 job, to stop the run today," Dodd said.

Still, ignoring the Blaine offense, which exploded for several big plays, was near impossible. Gorze finished with 267 yards passing, going 10 for 12 with no interceptions, all in the first half. Chau totaled four receptions for 129 yards and running backs Casey McCabe and Caleb Stathem each proved why they'll be viewed as dangerous weapons this season. The two combined for 129 yards rushing and three total touchdowns.

Blaine opens Northwest Conference play against Anacortes on Friday, Sept. 12.

"It's just a great night to be a Borderite for everybody," Dodd said.
