The Lummi offensive juggernaut is back in 2008.
The Blackhawks scored so often in their season opener Friday, Sept. 5., at Highland Christian that the scoreboard had problems keeping an accurate score, coach Jim Sandusky said.
Sandusky does know for certain that senior quarterback Dustin Tom had a big night, throwing for at least 500 yards and 12 touchdowns in leading Lummi to what Sandusky said was an 84-68 victory.
"Dustin threw the ball really well, and the receivers caught it really well," Sandusky said in a phone interview. "(Tom) played like a pure veteran. He's in for a big year if he can keep that up. He played great defensively, too, at linebacker."
Gale Jefferson, Kyle Finkbonner and Ray Jefferson were each on the receiving end of three scoring tosses from Tom, while Ronomus Revey caught two and Andre Revey grabbed one.
With that kind of production, Sandusky said the Blackhawks were able to jump out to a three-touchdown lead in the first half and keep the comfortable margin for most of the game.
"I think we'll learn a lot from this game, especially defensively," Sandusky said. "We have a lot of room to improve, and we have a tough one against Tri-Cities Prep coming up next week."
Sandusky said he was impressed by the hitting his team did on defense, even though the team gave up its share of big plays.
