DEMING - Bus drivers in the Mount Baker School District reviewed protocol and talked about safety issues this week after a student was left on the bus Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 2.

The elementary-age student was asleep on the school bus and he missed his stop, said Superintendent Richard Gantman. At the end of the route, the student was still asleep and the bus driver did not see him before the bus was put into the bus barn, Gantman said.

About 40 minutes later, the district was alerted that the student was missing and "the staff went out to the bus as a logical place to check and there he was... all sound asleep," Gantman said.

District officials are looking into the incident, but Gantman couldn't comment on any personnel action.

"We take student safety to be of utmost importance and we take this situation very seriously," Gantman said. "And we're going to take action to make sure that all our processes are appropriate for student safety."
