The United Way of Whatcom County hopes to raise $2.2 million with its 2008 campaign, a 6 percent increase over last year's record total.

The goal was announced Thursday, Sept. 4, during the annual campaign's kick-off luncheon at St. Luke's Health Education Center.

"Our board came to the conclusion that these uncertain economic times are when our community needs United Way the most," said Peter Theisen, president of the United Way of Whatcom County, in a statement. "So we are stepping up our efforts this year."

Bellingham Fire Chief Bill Boyd was chosen as the 2008 chairman of the 10-week campaign.

The local United Way provides funding for 31 partner agencies, such as the Bellingham Food Bank and the Opportunity Council. Officials say one in four Whatcom County residents is served in some way each year by a partner agency.
