BELLINGHAM — City crews worked through the night to repair a 16-inch water main on Bellingham’s waterfront that broke Thursday, Sept. 4.
Water was restored to the 30 or so businesses and residences on State Street and one on East Pine Street by 6:30 a.m. Friday morning, said Joy Monjure, communications coordinator for the city’s Public Works department.
When the work was complete, Wharf Street from State Street to Cornwall Avenue was reopened.
The nearly 40-year-old main, on the 100 block of Pine Street, broke at about 2 p.m. while it was being replaced, Monjure said.
The amount of water lost is expected to be insignificant, she said.
Monjure said people in buildings that lost water service should run their cold water first to make sure it looks clean.
Residue from inside the water pipes could cause the water to appear dirty or rust-colored, but is safe to drink, Monjure said.
"Especially don't wash white clothes because it will stain," she said.
