Burlington-Edison came one win away from a Class 2A state title last season, proving once again that some of the best football in the state is played in the Northwest Conference.
The Tigers will certainly miss many of the seniors who graduated from that squad, but the cupboard is hardly bare.
Running back Stetson Shearer is back and should get the bulk of the carries. Joining him in the backfield are Cole Sager and Jeff Adams. The three combined for more 1,800 yards rushing last season.
Troy O’Neill is expected to step in at quarterback after spending last season as a wide receiver. O’Neill will have Kolby Arendse’s big shoes to fill, but could be capable of it. He has good size and speed. The offensive line returns just one starter, but B-E always seems to find a way to reload at that position.
On defense the Tigers return a good portion of their starters from last season and have experience at the other spots.
The other thing to remember is that by going deep in the playoffs last season Burlington-Edison had a few more weeks of practice than nearly every team in the state. That will pay dividends this season.
