It seemed like Mount Vernon was everyone’s favorite pick to pull of an upset last season, and the Bulldogs nearly did so in the final game of the regular season against Ferndale.

What Mount Vernon will be striving for this season is dropping the dark horse label and becoming a top 3A team in the state. Looking to help them take that next step will be first-year coach Jaxon Schweikert.

Schweikert has plans for a no-huddle offense and wants to spread the ball around. Returning quarterback Ray Walser must be grinning. Already one of the top returning throwers in the Northwest Conference, he’ll get the chance to sling the ball around even more.

Walser will have favorite target Colin Findley-Meier back along with a handful of other capable players to help him out. Getting back to the postseason and winning a game or two is a possibility.
