Sedro-Woolley’s recent struggles in football could be coming to an end with the addition of new head coach Bryan Alexander.
At least that’s what the Cubs are hoping for.
Sedro-Woolley picked up one win last season, knocking off Squalicum in the second-to-last game. Other than that there was a lot heartbreak and disappointment. Alexander’s challenge will be changing the men-tality of a program that’s been used to losing. He should have some help from his returning players.
The Cubs’ Derek Garcia will be back at quarterback, and though he’s not very big he makes up for it in toughness. The two-time state wres-tling champion helped engineer Sedro-Woolley’s only win last season and should provide a spark.
He’ll be handing off to Ryan Mor-gan, who started last season at quar-terback before Garcia took over in the final weeks. He’s another player who isn’t very big, but has lots of heart.
One thing the Cubs will have to improve on is their defense. Sedro-Woolley allowed the third most points in the Northwest Conference last season (290) and can’t do that again. Having another year of sea-soning should help.
It might still be a building year for the Cubs, but they should be im-proved.
