BELLINGHAM - A water main on Bellingham's waterfront broke Thursday, Sept. 4, and disrupted service to residents and businesses downtown for several hours.

The aging main, on the 100 block of Pine Street, broke at about 2 p.m. while it was being replaced, said Joy Monjure, communications coordinator for the city's Public Works Department.

Residents and businesses on Wharf, State and Pine streets lost water service. Monjure said crews were working to repair it throughout the day, and could have it working by 10 p.m.

Wharf Street was closed to traffic while crews were working.

Among businesses affected, Pepper Sister's restaurant on State Street closed because of disrupted water service.
