Rockin' Frank Zappa tribute ale worth a toast

The brewers at the Lagunitas Brewing Company have come up with a new way to honor rock legend Frank Zappa that he'd no doubt be proud of -- with a beer.

They made a Belgian Tripel ale to honor the 40th anniversary of the release of Zappa's fourth album, "We're Only In It For the Money."

The beer has the album cover on its label and is sold in 22-ounce bottles. This is the fourth beer the brewery has made in tribute to Zappa. Starting last year, the brewery has released beers honoring Zappa's "Lumpy Gravy," "Freak Out," and "Absolutely Free" albums.

The latest tribute provides a great example of an American take on a traditionally Belgian style.

Tripels are usually golden in color, but this had a darker shade of orange that looked similar to an IPA.

The first taste boasted strong flavors of sweet fruit and to a lesser extent citrus, but that mellowed after the next couple sips.

The constant throughout was the strong aftertaste of alcohol, but that's to be expected with a Tripel.

This style normally has an alcohol-by-volume content that ranges from 7 to 10 percent. The Lagunitas version has an 8.2-percent alcohol-by-volume content.

Despite its strength, the alcohol taste in the Lagunitas version was masked better than other Tripels I've had.

This beer is sold in 22-ounce bottles, and I've found it in Terra Organica and Bargainica grocery stores. The brewery released this beer from April to June, so supplies have to be dwindling.

Don't hesitate to try it should you find it in the beer aisle.

WHAT'S ON TAP

I recently enjoyed a pint of the Avatar Jasmine IPA from the Seattle-based Elysian Brewing Company at the Green Frog Acoustic Tavern on State Street in Bellingham.

Brewed with jasmine flower petals, the beer has sweet, saccharine flavors and a lemony aftertaste. It's not what I expect from an IPA, but it's worth a try if you're looking for something out of the ordinary.
