On a sunny Wednesday evening at Boulevard Park, Grace Parks, center, teaches three other women the fundamentals of boxing.

The 28-year-old, four-time Golden Gloves winner and three-time national silver medalist is trying to get more women into the sport.

Here's her story, in her own words:

"One day I was training outside in the yard with my friends and this guy stops by and gives his card to my friends. He saw us training outside. He didn't even look at me. He went toward the guys and gave them his card.

"I took the card and went over to visit. The first thing he said to me when I showed up was, 'Do you want to be a ring girl?' He was joking, of course, trying to get to me.

"His name was Jim Ferguson. He's really famous around here and so I decided to check it out. That's how I started. I never thought I'd get into boxing. Just that one day when I started with Ferguson, I loved it.

"There's a lot of women out there that would love to do martial arts or get into boxing. I started this whole thing because I wanted women fighters to get together to box with me or learn how to box.

"I know that a lot of women out there want to do that, but don't know where to go. So I just went to a couple of gyms and asked if they wanted to do that with me.

"I was taught for free. Ferguson taught me for free. Kurt Morlock taught me for free. Ryan (Burlingame) taught me for free. I want to give that back.

"I just wanted to show the girls, here's a woman fighter and she spars with guys. She does every thing like guys, hits a pad, hits a bag, I want them to see that. And to tell themselves, 'Oh, I can be like this and I'm going to push myself to be that way.'"
