Bellingham/Whatcom Chamber of Commerce development director Drew Graham and business manager Chris McCartan attended the first and second year classes of Academy, a professional development program presented by the Western Association of Chamber Executives.
Academy is an interactive 3-day training program on chamber management essentials designed for chamber executives and staff professionals.
McCartan's first-year curriculum included three-hour classes on chamber trends, membership development, budgeting, legal issues, volunteer development and marketing. Graham, along with other second year students learned more about revenue development, budgeting, human resource management, government affairs and policy development.

TOYER EARNS FUND COUSELOR DESIGNATION

SMITH ELECT SUNRISE ROTARY PRESIDENT
The Bellingham Sunrise Rotary Club announced that Michael E. Smith from Zervas Group Architects has been elected board president for 2008-2009.
Smith is a charter member of the Sunrise Rotary Club which was founded October 5, 1990, under a joint-sponsorship by the Bellingham and Bellingham Bay Rotary Clubs.

VISTA MEMBER JOINS APPLIANCE DEPOT
Dallas Betz has joined Appliance Depot to do outreach and promotion work for the nonprofit appliance recovery program.
As a member of AmeriCorpsVISTA, Betz selected Appliance Depot as the community organization where he will complete a year of volunteer service. In this capacity, he will encourage area businesses and individuals to support environmental sustainability and jobs through the reuse of appliances and appliance parts.
Appliance Depot provides jobs and work experience for low-income residents in a training business that salvages, recycles, repairs, and sells used appliances. VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is the domestic Peace Corps started in 1964.
Prior to this, Betz was a teacher at Sedro-Wooley High School, an outdoor environmental educator, and a whitewater river raft guide. He is a 2000 graduate of Western Washington University.
