A Blaine man was arrested Wednesday, Sept. 3, after he posted a threat to shoot up Sunset Square on The Bellingham Herald's Web site story comments.

Bellingham police arrested Jeffrey N. Gargaro, 28, on suspicion of felony malicious harassment and booked him into Whatcom County Jail.

A comment posted at 6 a.m. on a story about Tuesday's Skagit County shooting spree said the author intended to "shoot up Sunset Square today."

A police officer in St. Louis, Mo., read the comment and notified the Bellingham Police Department, Belllingham Lt. Steve Felmley said.

The Bellingham Herald released to police the IP address the post was made from because investigators believed it was a credible threat.

Police obtained a search warrant and used that to identify Gargaro as the owner of the e-mail address posted with the comment, Felmley said.

Whatcom County Sheriff's deputies and Blaine police assisted in locating and arresting Gargaro, Felmley said.
