LUMMI RESERVATION - A Lummi man who suffered serious head injuries when his car crashed into a ditch on Lummi Shore Drive Tuesday, Sept. 2, was not wearing a seatbelt, authorities said Wednesday.
The incident began about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday when Lummi Police found a car described as being involved in an ongoing domestic dispute parked at the Catholic church near Kwina Road, said Lummi Police Chief Gary James.
When an officer tried to contact the occupants, the maroon Buick Regal sped off, pursued by police. The Buick swerved off the road soon afterward, James said, landing it in a ditch and totaling it. James said it is not yet clear how fast the car was going.
The driver was taken to St. Joseph Hospital with major head injuries. His female passenger had minor injuries and was conscious and walking. It was unclear whether she was wearing a seatbelt.
Lummi Police did not release the names or ages of those involved in the crash, pending criminal charges.
