Both lanes of the new Boulder Creek Bridge east of Maple Falls will open on Thursday, Sept. 4, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The new bridge along the Mount Baker Highway is higher and wider than the old one, which was prone to flooding when the creek below it clogged. The new one, which has been under construction since June 2007, includes a 10-foot-wide pedestrian and bicyclist path.
The DOT came in under its $7.3 million budget for the project, said spokeswoman Bronlea Mishler, but officials are still crunching the numbers and don't know by how much.
