Military recruitment needs to be debated. My father and brothers served in the military and I am proud of them. However, the military is not the best choice for everyone.

I think that we can all agree that serving our country is a patriotic thing to do. We are all unique and should be offered a variety of ways to serve. For some, the Peace Corps or volunteer work is a better fit.

As a parent and educator, I am concerned about having military recruiters in our high schools. Many students are not ready to make that commitment and are easily persuaded by peers and media.

In 2002, Congress enacted the No Child Left Behind Act which requires high schools to release their list of 11th and 12th grade students to military recruiters. Families have the right to opt out.

Please read page eight of your Bellingham School Calendar or call the school if you didn't get one.

The opt out form has to be returned no later than September 15th.
