Last year only the narrowest of margins - a tie-breaker - separated the Sehome and Burlington-Edison boys' cross country teams at the state championship in Pasco.

It looks like more of the same can be expected this fall, as the Mariners and Tigers once again are the top-ranked Class 2A teams in the 2008 Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association preseason poll.

Sehome, which tied Burlington-Edison in points at the state meet in November but lost based on where each team's sixth-place runner finished in the race, opens the season in the top spot, followed by the Tigers in No. 2.

The two rivals, who have finished first and second at state the past two years, are only two of a host of Northwest Conference cross-country teams listed among the top 10 in their respective classifications in the poll.

The Sehome girls gave the Mariners a clean sweep of the 2A divisions, as they also earned the top preseason spot. The two-time defending state champions are seeking their fourth state title in seven years this fall.

Right on their heels at No. 2 is cross-city challenger Squalicum, which drops down to the 2A ranks this year after winning three of the past five 3A state titles and finishing third last year.

Bellingham, which finished second to Sehome at state last year, makes it a clean sweep for the city schools in the 2A girls' poll. The Red Raiders are ranked 10th.

The Squalicum boys, who did not qualify as a team for last year's 3A meet but sent two individuals, also were ranked third in the 2A boys' poll.

Lynden Christian and Nooksack Valley both placed their boys' and girls' teams in the 1A rankings.

The Lyncs boys, who finished sixth at state last year, open the season ranked third, while the girls, who also finished sixth, are seventh.

The Pioneers boys, who were fourth at state, were ranked sixth, while the girls' team moved up from its seventh-place finish at state to a fourth-place ranking.

The Meridian girls, who finished third at the 1A state tournament last year, were also ranked fifth.

The Mead boys and Eastlake girls topped the Class 4A polls, while the North Central boys and Lakeside girls were the top picks in 3A. Port Townsend topped the 1A boys' list, while King's was No. 1 in 1A girls. The St. George's boys and Lacey Northwest Christian girls topped the 2B/1B polls.
