BELLINGHAM - Callaloo Caribbean Kitchen will be closed temporarily for a few weeks, staff said.

The restaurant at 1212 N. State Street closed last week, hanging a sign on the door saying the business was "temporarily closed while we change management."

Owner Greg Daane was reportedly traveling outside the country and did not return messages left on his home and work phones.

Anguilina Zagorova, one of three potential new co-owners of the Callaloo, said last week that rumors that the city was shutting down the business are false.

The Callaloo has received no recent health code violations, according to Whatcom Health Department files.

Bellingham Fire Marshal Jason Napier said there are no pending fire code violations against the business, either.

The Callaloo has had no violations with the Washington Liquor Control Board, said spokeswoman Susan Reams.

Zagorova declined last week to go into specifics about the management changes until the transfer is completed. She said the Callaloo will be closed for about two weeks.

An application to assume the business' liquor license was received by the Liquor Control Board in July, Reams said, adding that the average application turnaround is more than two months. The application could be approved sooner depending on a number of factors, Reams said.
