I was fascinated by the parking ticket story. How can individuals get away with racking up so many fines and be allowed to continue to do so?
I think the city of Bellingham should take a more aggressive role in collecting the back fines, and follow through with non-payment punishments described on the ticket envelope - booting of the offending car, and denial of license renewal, etc.
Although it may be true that some of the scofflaws who have "decades old" tickets may be deceased, surely the dates of the offenses could attest that they are alive and well and still parking illegally.
It's like old-fashioned parenting; when the child does something wrong, there is a consequence, and that consequence must be followed through for the child to learn it is unpleasant to do that wrong thing and be less likely to repeat it, or else face another, maybe harsher, consequence.
