For good, clean fun that's actually pretty dirty, nothing quite tops the rodeo.
This weekend is your chance to head to the grandstands and watch talented cowboys and cowgirls showing off their skills, whether they're racing, riding or roping.
The PRCA Lynden Rodeo will start at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 at the Northwest Fair and Events Center. Tickets are available online at www.lyndenrodeo.com and cost $10 in advance or $12 at the gate.
Here are five things to check out during the rodeo.
CHILI COOK-OFF
There will be hay rides, horse rides, a children's roping clinic and, of course, a sampling of chili from local restaurants. The cook-off will take place from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 in the People's Place building at the Northwest Washington Fair and Events Center. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for children 5 and younger, with proceeds going to send a tractor to a missionary organization in Chad, Africa.
BARREL RACING
For fast action on a horse, check out the barrel racers whipping around the arena, and just hope they don't knock over any barrels in the process.
SADDLE BRONC
Eight seconds is a long time when you're on the back of a bucking bronco. Audience members will be on the edge of their seats to see who can make it in this must-see event at the rodeo.
STEER WRESTLING
In an impressive show of riding skill, the cowboy or cowgirl starts on a horse before grabbing a sprinting steer by the horns and bringing it to the ground. It's a lot of action in just a little time.
COWBOY GIFT AND TRADE SHOW
If you'd rather shop that take in the rodeo, then check out the Cowboy Gift and Trade Show for art, crafts, souvenirs and more. The show will take place from 4-10:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22 and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and 4-10:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 under the grandstand.
