Ballots for the primary are due Tuesday, Aug. 19, but fewer than a third had been returned to the Whatcom County Auditor's Office as of noon Monday.

The slow returns has led Whatcom County Auditor Shirley Forslof to lower her turnout prediction to between 45 and 50 percent for the primary. She originally predicted turnout closer to 55 percent.

Because ballots must be postmarked Tuesday or earlier to be valid, those who haven't voted yet are advised to drop them at drop boxes now rather than mail them.

Drop boxes are available from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at these locations:

? Whatcom County Courthouse, 311 Grand Ave., Bellingham

? Blaine City Hall, 344 H St.

? Everson Fire Station, 101 E. Main St.

? Ferndale Library, 2222 Main St.

? Kendall Fire Station, 7528 Kendall Road.

? Lynden Library, 216 Fourth St.
