A man accused of attacking a woman at an ATM in Ferndale pleaded not guilty to second-degree attempted murder in Whatcom County Superior Court Friday, Aug. 8.

Joseph R. Smith, 20, is accused of slashing at the neck of Samantha Shields, 24, with a box cutter while she was withdrawing money from the ATM at the Whatcom Educational Credit Union branch the morning of July 28.

Shields received a 4-inch gash and several other cuts on her neck and jaw. The wounds required more than 50 stiches.

Smith has a status hearing scheduled for Sept. 17 and a trial date Sept. 29.

Smith is facing dual charges, Whatcom County Senior Deputy Prosecutor Chris Quinn said. As an alternative to the attempted murder charge, Smith is facing a charge of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon.

The dual charges will allow a jury to consider both if the case goes to trial, Quinn said.

Smith remains in Whatcom County Jail on $1 million bail.
