Beer: Gonzo Imperial Porter a fitting tribute to the ‘Good Doctor’

Buying beer is easy – provided you’re old enough. Buying good beer, however, is decidedly tougher.

As the newly minted steward of this column, I offer my help and expertise in making the distinction between good and bad. With beer prices climbing ever-higher, swallowing an unwise choice is getting even more bitter.

Thus, I’d like to turn your attention to the Gonzo Imperial Porter, which is from Denver-based Flying Dog Brewery and bills itself as a tribute to the late writer Hunter S. Thompson.

I expected this beer to be a tasty choice — most from this brewery are — and it didn’t disappoint. It features a strong mocha flavor with a nutty finish, but doesn’t have the overpowering taste and bite I expect from imperial porters. It’s still smooth enough to enjoy on a hot, sunny summer afternoon.

Ralph Steadman, a longtime friend of Thompson’s, designed and drew the beer’s label. It has a fitting portrait of Thompson and reminds me of his books’ covers.

This is a beer for every hop-headed gonzo-fan out there. It’s released several times each year and is only sold in four-packs, though, so don’t miss your chance should you find it in the beer aisle.
