Each week The Bellingham Herald takes a look at a company that makes products locally. This week: Nylatech Inc.
What it makes: Everson-based Nylatech manufactures plastic sheets, rods and tubes for use in machines in the forestry, mining and agriculture industries, said Vice President and General Manager Dale Delmage. These replace parts that traditionally have been made with metals, which rust or corrode. Nylatech’s plastic products weigh less than metal parts, don’t need to be lubricated as often and have longer lifespans, Delmage said.
What’s noteworthy: Now in its 13th year of business, Nylatech is expanding its production by constructing a new, 15,000- square-foot building next door to its current facility on Lincoln Street in Everson, Delmage said. The new space will have warehouse and office space and will be used for machining and fabrication, he said.
Nylatech is one of four plastics manufacturers in North America that makes products with the process Nylatech uses, Delmage said. This process allows Nylatech to produce quickly and with lower costs, and as a result its products have been popular, he said. The new facility will help the company keep pace with this growing demand.
Sales revenue: Delmage would not disclose sales revenues because the company is privately held.
Marketplace: Delmage said 75 percent of the company’s sales are in the United States. He said the rest of the company’s sales are exports, most of which are into Canada, but the company sells in Asia, as well.
Work force: Nylatech has 22 employees.
Production process: The process begins with a liquid monomer, which is frozen at
room temperature and put into a collection of tanks and reservoirs to heat and melt it. Once it has become liquid, two ingredients are added to it to make it polymerize. Next, this liquid is put into a heated mold that is the shape of the end product — usually a plate, rod or tube. The combination of heat and the ingredients in the liquid causes a reaction that produces a solid, Nylon 6, which is the base material for Nylatech’s products.
Ownership: Nylatech’s parent company is The Redco Group, a manufacturer of industrial plastics based in Langley, B.C.
