The Squalicum girls’ doubles tennis team of Anne and Andrea d’Aquino went 1-1 Friday at the Class 3A Northwest District tournament at Arlington High School and will not advance to the state tournament.

The d’Aquinos, who went 1-1 on Thursday, won 6-4, 6-3 in the consolation second round over Arlington’s Bridgette Burkholder and Morgan Galusha.

“The other team had a soft style of overhead so we did a number of lobs to win the points,” Squalicum coach Joe O’Brien, “and they weren’t able to put the ball away on us. We also closed well.”

In the consolation thirdround match, the d’Aquino sisters lost to Shorecrest’s Kelsey Monson and Lauren Olson 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 and their season was over.

O’Brien said the d’Aquinos attacked the net well but the odds were not good at winning the match.

“They played very well,” he said. “The other team just played a little bit better in the end. We turned a lot of heads. They have a great strategy in doubles style.”

The Shorcrest team of Natalie Simpson and Kyoka Izawa beat Meadowdale’s Sarah Porteson and Lianne Fijalka 5- 7, 6-3, 6-2 to win the doubles district title.

In singles play, Squalicum’s Amy Wilson, who went 1-1 on Thursday, lost in the consolation second round to Everett’s Julie Mills 6-4, 7-5.

“She had a very good close match,” O’Brien said. “She felt pretty good about it.”

Arlington’s Ivana Krommelova dominated the singles tournament, finishing off Shorecrest’s Alena Owen 6-0, 6- 0 in the title game. Krommelova did not lose a game in her four matches.

O’Brien said the Storm, who went 10-1 in conference and 13- 3 on the season, have had a successful run.

“I felt pretty good about we played this year,” he said. “The girls played good tennis and learned a lot.”
