One tough inning was enough to end Ferndale’s softball season.
The Golden Eagles battled Arlington in a loser-out game at the Class 3A Northwest District tournament at Janicki Fields in Sedro-Woolley before falling 4- 0. The loss ended the season for Ferndale at 13-8.
“It’s a bummer to lose out … they battled hard three games in a row,” Ferndale coach Holly Hilton said in a phone interview.
The teams played to a scoreless tie until the bottom of the sixth inning when Arlington scored four runs. All the runs were unearned.
“We’ve been playing really well,” Hilton said. “They have been playing great defense.”
But in the sixth inning Ferndale committed four errors. The inning started with three errors in a row, and after the first out, Arlington took a 2-0 lead on a base hit. Another error led to two more runs.
The Golden Eagles had their scoring chances, leaving runners on base in each of the first five innings.
Amanda Le had two of Ferndale’s four hits. Alainah Hendrickx had a single and Hannah Kranz added a double.
Ferndale finished the season playing well.
The Golden Eagles won their last five Northwest Conference games. On Thursday at the district tournament Ferndale fell to Shorecrest by one run but later 10-runned Lynnwood.
