FERNDALE — Two men were arrested for allegedly breaking into cars and wielding a knife at a citizen in the parking lot of the Cost Cutter on LaBounty Drive on Thursday.

D.J. Lorenz, 18, and Samuel S. Cooper, 20, were booked into Whatcom County Jail on investigation of first-degree assault and vehicle prowling.

Ferndale Police Sgt. Bill Hatchett said the car owner caught Lorenz breaking into the vehicle just before 5:30 p.m. When confronted, Lorenz allegedly threatened the owner with a knife and ran away.

Hatchett said Cooper was driving a vehicle nearby and left the parking lot at the same time, picking up Lorenz a little way down the road.

The Washington State Patrol spotted a vehicle matching the description as it headed southbound on Interstate 5. A trooper pulled the vehicle over in the parking lot of Fred Meyer on West Bakerview Road, and witnesses identified Lorenz and Cooper as the suspects involved in the vehicle prowl, Hatchett said.
