ARLINGTON — It was a demanding first day for Squalicum at the Class 3A Northwest District girls’ tennis tournament on Thursday at Arlington High School, but the Storm can make it all go away with victories today.
Squalicum sent two singles players and two doubles teams to the tournament, and after Day 1 action the Storm still has a shot of sending a singles player and doubles team to state.
“We had a pretty good day,” Squalicum coach Joe O’Brien said in a phone interview. “We’re going back (to play today).”
Storm twins Anne and Andrea d’Aquino entered district as a top seed and won their opening-round match 6-3, 7-6 (5) over Everett’s Mya Nguyen and Alysia Letourneau. The d’Aquinos then lost their quarterfinal match 6-3, 6-3 to Shorecrest’s Natakue Simpson and Kyoka Izawa in what O’Brien described as a loss to a team with a “different style.”
“They played well to begin with,” O’Brien said. “They got caught by a different style they haven’t seen and it threw them off a bit.”
The twin sisters must win two matches today to earn the district’s No. 2 seed to the state tournament.
Squalicum’s other doubles team, Danielle Grant and Aurea d’Aquino, opened with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat to Simpson-Izawa. They nearly won their consolation match before falling 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) to Nguyen-Letourneau. Grant and d’Aquino were ahead 6-5 in the third set.
“They played a great first set,” O’Brien said. “If they could have kept that momentum going … It was a great battle.”
In singles play, Squalicum’s Amy Wilson opened with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Arlington’s Chelsea Boulton. Wilson then battled Shorecrest’s Alena Owen in the quarterfinals before falling 6-2, 7-6 (6).
“She did well,” O’Brien said. “I was very pleased with Amy’s effort.”
Squalicum’s Lonnie Hilton had a tough draw, according to O’Brien, and lost her opener 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 — a match that took nearly three hours. Hilton then played Everett’s Julie Mills and fell 6-4, 6-0.
“She played her heart out,” O’Brien said.
Tournament play ends today at Arlington High School. The Class 3A state tournament starts next Friday at Kennewick.
